Core Values

Core Values

Discover what matters most to you · 3 steps · 10–15 min

Your values are the beliefs and principles that guide your choices and shape the way you want to live. They influence how you react in tough situations, how you treat others and what goals you set for yourself.

This exercise will help you discover the values that are most important to you—the ones you want to stand by, even when it's difficult. Identifying your core values gives you a clearer sense of who you are, what motivates you and how you can make decisions that fit your true self.

Take your time and be honest with yourself. There are no right or wrong answers.

Culture vs. core values

Cultural values are often shared by your family, community or country. You might feel proud of them, and they can be very important — but sometimes they're simply “the way things are done.” Examples: tradition, respect for elders, family honour.

Core personal values are the values that shape your decisions no matter where you are or who you're with. These may align with your culture, or be a bit different because of your dreams, experiences or beliefs.

Ask yourself: “Would I still want to live by this value even if I moved to a new place or other people disagreed?” If yes, it's likely a core value.
